About the founder

The Cacaomuseum was founded by chef and cocoa connoisseur Henkjan Laats, with years of experience in Latin America and sustainable chocolate production. His mission? To inspire people with the flavors, stories, and magic of real chocolate.

At Cacao Museum, chocolate is more than just something sweet. It is craftsmanship, history, culture, and flavour all wrapped into one small bar.

Located in the charming Czaar Peterbuurt in Amsterdam Oost, Cacao Museum is a specialist bean-to-bar chocolate shop founded by Henkjan Laats in 2017. Since opening the doors, the mission has remained the same: to introduce people to the incredible world of real craft chocolate.

Unlike mass-produced chocolate, bean-to-bar chocolate focuses on quality cacao, transparent sourcing, and small-scale production. Every bar tells a different story depending on where the cacao was grown, how it was fermented, and how the chocolate maker developed its flavour.

Inside the shop, you will find more than 20 carefully selected craft chocolate brands from around the world. From bright and fruity Madagascan cacao to deep, nutty flavours from Peru, Ecuador, Vietnam, or Tanzania, every origin offers something unique.
